Forward in Unity Town Hall Meeting

Sunday September 30, 2018
3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Trinity UMC Grand Island

On Feb. 27, 2019, will United Methodists wake up united, divided or in limbo?
You’ve read stories and heard the news about The United Methodist Church’s upcoming special session of General Conference to address concerns around human sexuality. The special called 2019 General Conference, set for February 23-26 in St. Louis, will focus on moving the denomination past its decades-long struggle with issues around homosexuality. Proposed plans offer a way to stay together and ways to split.
Join Bishop Ruben Saenz Jr. as he addresses the recent recommendation by the Council of Bishops and leads discussions on this important subject. You’re invited to come listen, learn and, most importantly, share.  FUMC would like as many as possible to attend this meeting. Sign up in the church office to ride in a van and/or carpool.

Other Community Notes

Comfort Closets – A Thrivent Community Event. Did you know that there are children in our school systems who come to school on a daily basis without the basic necessities that we often take for granted, such as clothing that fits, basic school supplies, having their hair and teeth brushed, and nourishment to get them through their morning? Many items, the teachers themselves provide these basic needs. Through a Thrivent Community event, we are putting together Comfort Closets for elementary schools in Columbus and Schuyler to help alleviate this burden on our schools and teachers. We are asking for donations from you to supply these closets. Items needed but not limited to are: pencils & pens, rulers, erasers, notebooks, folders / binders, backpacks, scissors, dry shampoo, glue sticks, markers / crayons, socks / underwear (children’s size 5- adult size 14, tennis shoes (new or lightly used), toothpaste & toothbrushes, handi wipes, refillable water bottles, deodorant, granola bars / healthy snack foods, hairbrushes / ponytail holders or barrettes, belts (new or lightly used), leggings (new), hats and warm gloves, small containers of soap / shampoo / conditioner. Please drop off donations at the church office by August 3rd.

Homes Wanted & Needed – Great foster parents are willing to work in partnership, are committed to provided care and support, are willing to complete training and ongoing education, are willing to open their hearts and homes. If you have ever thought about foster care, wanted to know more about it, or just did not know where to start, let us take some time to share about this rewarding and needed service. Call and speak to a foster parent, recruiter, and trainer to find out about the role YOU can play and the difference YOU can make one child at a time. To speak with the foster care program at Epworth Village contact Heather Hultgrien (402) 710-3650, hhultgrien@epworthvillage.org.

Center For Survivors - The center is now in its 27 year of serving our families and individuals in six counties. We have served over 1,000 individuals in 2016. One in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime, and one in seven men will experience severe physical violence by their partner. Churches have been vital in providing our center resources for families and individuals impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault.  We have many families and individuals on our Christmas wish lists that are in need of new winter clothing. If you would like to adopt a family, for our Christmas wish list program, please call 402-564-2155 or email outreach@centerforsurvivors.net. Our need list is in the office at First United Methodist Church. Some of the items include garbage bags, laundry detergent, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, paper towels, shampoo, conditioner, cereal, soups, diapers, Ziploc bags, and gift cards.

Platte County Food Pantry 3020 18th Street, Suite 13, Columbus - September item request: Kleenex, Toilet Paper/ Tissue. The collection barrels are located in the west entrance next to the elevator and by the alley entrance at FUMC.
